Things to see and do in Salford
Some of the major attractions of the city are in the quay area where you will find entertainment in the form of a large cinema complex, a series of pubs and well designed walkways.
Visit the Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which has a great variety of displays to offer. These include a Victorian gallery, Period Street and other exhibitions. Family events and other social events are not uncommon. The period street looks at a set of houses and shops from the 1890s. The museum consists of a fine collection of paintings, artwork and sculptures in the form of a Victorian gallery but to keep the theme fresh, some 20th century art work has also been displayed here. A recent addition is the Lifetime Gallery where the past and present of the city of Salford has been displayed by means of exhibitions as well as other modern forms such as listening points and IT zones. There is also an interactive feature through the use of activities. The museum is also home to a local history library.
Another famous attraction is The Lowry which offers a beautiful view and a great many sources of entertainment. There are two theatres in the building, one being The Lyric which is famous for having the largest stage in the country outside of London and the other is Quays, which is reserved for slightly smaller performances of the likes of ballet, opera and comedy, all of which are loved immensely by visitors. The work of LS Lowry is displayed in the Lowry Galleries, but the work of other artists from England and abroad is also exhibited here to add some variety. The building also has its own restaurant as well as a shop and café so you have everything you need for a perfect day/evening out in one place.
For a bit more outdoorsy fun, visit the Salford Watersports centre where qualified coaches will guide you through all forms of sailing, canoeing, windsurfing etc. this is also a climbing wall indoors which provides a refreshing alternative from the other activities. The coaching facilities vary and you can take on a one-day taster or a proper course that lasts around 8 weeks.
